The Benefits of Gratitude

We are days away from the time of year when people think of gratitude the most – Thanksgiving.

I could have given you another remodeler tip today but I choose to talk about thankfulness, counting your blessings, seeing the simple pleasures and acknowledging everything you receive whether it has monetary value or not.

For me, practicing gratitude has taught me to shift my focus from the everyday worries, stress and feeling of lack to that of a feeling of abundance. When you are grateful, your relationships are better, it improves your health and it reduces stress.

If you want to learn about gratitude from an expert, meet Dr. Emmons – who has been studying gratitude for almost ten years and is considered by many to be the world’s leading authority on gratitude – is author of the book, “Thanks!: How the New Science of Gratitude Can Make You Happier”.

The information in this book is based on research involving thousands of people conducted by a number of different researchers around the world. One of the things these studies show is that practicing gratitude can increase happiness levels by around 25%. This is significant, among other things, because just as there’s a certain weight that feels natural to your body and which your body strives to maintain, your basic level of happiness is set at a predetermined point. What this means is you can practice being more grateful and your body will remember it and want more of it.

One thing I find helpful is to use gratitude to put things into proper perspective.  Life is not about getting things perfect, though as a remodeler I can say most of us strive for that –  it is about seeing what is good about what you have, what you can learn from it and how you can benefit from what is.

You might keep a gratitude journal, talk around the dinner table about the things you are most grateful for, send gratitude letters/notes or you may share what you are grateful for in another way but being grateful is the key ingredient for a happier holiday season and life.

One of the things we are most grateful for today: you.

Happy Holidays!
