Tool Tips

One thing that every remodeler, whether they be a professional or a hobbyist, will agree on is that tools can make or break a job well done.

You don’t have to spend an arm and a leg to buy tools that will get the job done, and whether you spend $200 or $2000, it’s key that you take good care of your tools. Here are a few tips to keep your tools lasting in great shape for years to come!

  • Probably the easiest one to do, but also the easiest one to forget is proper maintenance of your tools! I can’t tell you how many times I’ve put a tool down and walked away, leaving them to sit outside in freezing temps or right in the stream of the sprinklers. Or what about leaving them on the ground and driving over them? I may know a remodeler or two that has done that. When you’re finished with the job for the day, make sure you pick up your tools and put them in a safe and dry place.
  • If it doesn’t sound right, there’s probably something wrong! Tools break and sometimes, you may be able to hear the problem before you can see it. If one of your tools starts to sound clunky, stop what you’re doing immediately. Not only will this keep further damage from happening, it will also keep you safe from possible bodily harm. If you’re familiar with the tool and feel comfortable doing the repairs, have at it. If you’re not comfortable doing it on your own, please take it and get it fixed professionally.
  • If your tool has moving parts, keep them well lubricated. This keeps all those moving parts moving, as well as keeps rust from developing. Machine oil which can be bought from your local hardware store is recommended, it’s important that you consult the owner’s manual.

And that’s it! Keep your tools stored properly, listen to what they’re telling you, and keep those moving parts moving. And of course, the biggest tip I can give you is to be careful when using any type of tool. Happy hammering!
